Western Bulldogs beat St Kilda by a point in Ballarat, Collingwood down Carlton at Victoria Park''
Western Bulldogs Win Thriller Against St Kilda, Killing Off Saints' AFLW Finals Hopes
In a heart-stopping match, the Western Bulldogs have come from behind to defeat St Kilda by a single point, crushing the Saints' AFLW finals aspirations. The Bulldogs trailed for most of the game but managed to pull ahead, securing a 5.6 (36) to 5.5 (35) victory in Ballarat.
St Kilda led by seven points at quarter time and eight points at the main break, but Deanna Berry's brilliant snap from deep in the right forward pocket just before half-time kept the Bulldogs in the game. The home side fought back with two goals to one in the third term, drawing level at three-quarter time. Jessica Fitzgerald's goal two minutes into the final term put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time.
In a tense final quarter, St Kilda levelled the score with a major to Ashleigh Richards at the eight-minute mark. The Bulldogs edged ahead with a behind 90 seconds later, setting up a gripping final section of the game. St Kilda had two opportunities to win the game late on, but Jesse Wardlaw sprayed a set shot across goal from 40m out, and Tyanna Smith kicked the ball out on the full from a narrow angle in the right forward pocket. The Bulldogs held on in the final seconds to secure a thrilling win.
Despite leading clearances and contested possessions, St Kilda committed nine more turnovers than the home side. With one game left, both teams are a game and a half behind eighth-placed Essendon, making it impossible for either team to make the finals.
In another dramatic finish, Carlton held off arch-rivals Collingwood by four points at Victoria Park. Collingwood struggled in attack for most of the game, kicking just one goal in two and a half quarters. Carlton led by five points after one quarter and nine points at half-time. Keeley Sherar's great goal in the third term put the Blues up by 15. Collingwood answered through Imogen Barnett but still trailed by nine points at three-quarter time. The final term started with brutal contests, and the Magpies needed an early goal, which they got through Mikala Cann to narrow the margin to three with 14 minutes left.
